What is the Tomatis® Method?

The Tomatis® Method, also known as the Tomatis Method or Audio-Psycho-Phonology (APP), is an auditory-based therapy and educational program developed by Dr. Alfred A. Tomatis, a French ear, nose, and throat specialist, in the 1950s. This method is designed to improve various aspects of communication, language, and overall well-being by working on the auditory system.

Electronic Ear

Central to the Tomatis Method is the use of an electronic device known as the “Electronic Ear” or “Tomatis Listening Device.” This device delivers specially filtered and modulated music or sound stimuli to the listener’s ears. The frequencies and patterns of these sounds are carefully selected and customized based on the individual’s specific needs and goals.

Auditory Stimulation and Training

The method involves a series of listening sessions during which individuals wear headphones and engage in active listening exercises. These exercises are designed to stimulate and exercise the ear and auditory system.

Progressive Listening Programs

Tomatis programs are often structured in phases, starting with passive listening and gradually progressing to more active and challenging auditory exercises. The goal is to improve auditory processing, balance, and coordination.

Integration with Other Therapies

The Tomatis Method is often used in conjunction with other therapeutic interventions, such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, and educational support, to address a wide range of issues, including speech and language disorders, learning disabilities, attention deficits, and sensory processing disorders.

Individualized Approach

Each Tomatis program is tailored to the specific needs of the individual, taking into account their auditory profile and desired outcomes. Assessment and regular monitoring are typically part of the process.
